TOPIC: Pellet stove vent

Pellet stove vent 10 years 7 months ago #57078

Pellet stove vent pipe travels through the first floor wall on the exterior,  up through the porch roof. Lots of soot on siding and soffit. any thoughts?

DIY-s and handyman's are always being a wounder-kid's ! When I see something like this, i just ask - do those people have common sense ! Do they have eyes to see their installation if they didn't have time to read and understand Manufacturers Installation Manual ! Years ago, I have experienced similar situation (incorrect venting, and use of inadequate materials and type of flue piping) with Tankless Water Heaters (or should I say "Hot water Heaters", :)  )  Local department store (do not want to use names here) made big advertising campaign, with all those governmental credits and savings, sold TWH (or "tHwh" :) ) them in large numbers. DIY-s and handyman did installation with just regular, very often 30 GA galvanized sheet metal pipe, which, by the way, that same store just had in stock,( instead special Stainless Steal , sealed, recommended by manufacturer) and then , because I happened to be listed as a HVAC service company on the manufacturer's web site ( had to be qualified for it) people started calling me ! But, unfortunately, homeowners are very hard to convince in cases like this, when you try to tell them that they did something wrong, and now, they need new unit, instead just new flue pipes, and that they have lost warranties because of inadequate installation, or they could have burned their house down,

The soot would be a very minor issue compared to venting so close to an operable window.  Death or soot... hmmm.

There is nothing sweeter than the smell of fresh cut grass on a baseball infield, the click of a wooden bat and the taste of a hot dog at a warm sunny daytime double-header.

Standards vary, but carbon monoxide exhaust vents should be at least 6 feet from door / window openings and / or 3 foot above same.
The flue to be used and fire proofing around same will depend on the rating of the gas / oil burner.
